Are We listening?
Over and over again in the letters to the seven churches we read in Revelation 2 and 3 the words, “he who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
In the context of John’s Revelation these seven churches are facing judgement and trial, primarily because of their unfaithfulness to God and to His Word.
—The church in Ephesus is accused of forsaking its first love and told to repent.
—The church in Smyrna will face a great trial of faith and even imprisonment and they are encouraged to be faithful unto death.
—The church in Pergamum is told to repent of false teaching and idolatry.
—The church in Thyatira is tolerating wickedness and immorality.
—The church in Sardis is told to wake up.
—The church in Philadelphia is actually commended for keeping God’s Word.
—The church in Laodicea is told they are lukewarm and going to be spit out of Christ’s mouth.
Churches are judged by how well they heed God’s Word. Do we hear what the Spirit of God says to the churches? Do we strive to follow God’s Word as we should?
Last Sunday night we looked at how there are no perfect churches. Churches are full of sinners who have been redeemed by Christ. We know there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
However, our resting in Christ does not give us the liberty to ignore God’s Word or His Spirit as these churches in Revelation did.
