The Return of the Old Fashioned Prayer Meeting

I am calling our new prayer meeting an Old Fashioned Prayer Meeting because I do want to instill something of the past rather than what often happens in prayer meetings today.  Many times prayer meetings are more about fellowship than they are about prayer.  There are discussions about prayer and what to pray for for the majority of the time and then just a little bit of time reserved at the end for the actual praying.  Unfortunately, sometimes that can lead us to gossip rather than true prayer.  So here are a few thoughts as we look forward to our new prayer meeting beginning Wednesday, October 3rd at 7PM at the Manse.

First,  we will simply pray.  We will not take any prayer requests or discuss any prayer requests at 7pm, we will simply start praying.  No one is required to pray, but it is open to any in the room that would like to pray.  I will lead us in prayer at 7PM and then we will go around the room for others who would like to pray.  After we are done praying, please stay as long as you would like for fellowship.  Fellowship with fellow believers is important to us as well.  And, if you have any requests you would like us to pray for on Wednesday nights please get them to me prior to 7PM.

Second, the focus of our prayers is the ministry of Faith Bible Church.  We tend to do well in praying for needs that we see around us, but let us not neglect the Church and the fact that we want FBC to be a witness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ here in Brick, NJ long after we are all gone.  All prayers are appropriate, and please pray for whatever prayer requests you would like prayed for, but let us not forget the following examples of what it means to pray for the ministry of the Church as well:

Pray for our primary mission of the Church in making disciples.

Pray for our members that they might be given the opportunities to share the hope within them and opportunities to invite others to worship.

Pray for the preaching of the word each week.

Pray for new members for FBC.

Pray for the communities in which our members live.

Pray for God’s kingdom to expand in Ocean County by God’s Spirit.  Pray that the Lord would send more laborers into the harvest field.

Third, corporate prayer in the body of Christ is important and all are invited to the Manse to pray on Wednesdays.  But prayer is not limited to a time and a location.  If you are unable to join us on a Wednesday night, please pray for the ministry of the Church in your own home.  If 7PM does not work pray at 6PM or 8PM.  This is an effort that all of our members can join together in.

Matthew 9:35-38, “And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.  When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.  Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
