Making the Best Use of This Time
Ephesians 5:15, 16, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”
I read a statistic recently that caused me to think about making the best use of time. I don’t remember the exact number but approximately 85% of people today say they became Christians because someone invited them to church. Now we all know that statistics are arbitrary. They change somewhat depending on who is asked, or even how the question is asked. But this statistic stands out to me because I have heard similar claims many times in the past. Many, many people come to Christ because someone simply took the time to invite them to church. God is pleased to use the foolishness of preaching to draw people to himself. It isn’t the gimmicks. It isn’t the special programs or smoke and mirrors, but the simple proclamation of the Gospel and the simplicity of an invitation.
I want to encourage you in this last month of the year to use all of the resources, and yes even this time of year as we reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ, to invite others to come to worship with you.
We have two special events you can take advantage of as well in your inviting. One week from today on December 7th we will gather at the church building at 6:30 PM and then go caroling in the neighborhood. We will come back to the building for a time of fellowship afterwards. Also we will have a Christmas Eve service at 6:00 PM on the 24th. That in addition to our regular two services on Sunday give you 12 opportunities in December to invite someone to come and hear the truth of the Gospel and be blessed by being with God’s people.
Take advantage of the resources available in your inviting. There are business cards with church information on them. We have church brochures you can use. And if you know anyone who needs a Bible, we have blue paperback copies that you can give away. All of these resources are in the foyer at the church building. If you need help finding anything let me know.
Let us take advantage of this time of year when we celebrate the incarnation to be more deliberate in asking people to come and worship with us. It doesn’t take any special abilities, information, or skill, just tell people when and where you worship and invite them to come and hear some Good News!
